Sabaki challenge 2015 tournament dvd3/28/2023 ![]() So in other words, Sabaki seems to be like a bare knuckles martial arts boxing match, with kicks. The winner is decided by points, by judge's decision, or awarded if he knocks out his opponent (which of course will disqualify you in one of our tournaments). Mouth guards are required, but no fist guards or any other type of padding are allowed. Unlike traditional karate tournaments, there are weight divisions for men (not women). Some of the rules we agree with (no direct strikes to the knee, no kicks to the groin), others are a mystery to me (no hand strikes are allowed to the head, but kicks are). Acceptable levels of contact in Sabaki would get you disqualified from an ISKF tournament. They do have rules, but those rules are different than the rules which govern our regulated tournaments, and the judging is also quite different. The Sabaki, and other extreme martial arts challenges, don't really fit into the traditions of Shotokan. So why isn't it talked of? Why don't we participate? Obviously I have no official answers, but I've been pondering the question, and I think I have a few ideas. When that's the case, I'm certainly not going to be the one to ask Sensei about it! I don't really know for certain because it's never spoken of in an "official" setting, it's just talked of by karate-ka when the Senseis aren't around. There are rumors that some people used to participate, but from what I understand, this is frowned upon. Our organization does not participate in the Sabaki Challenge, although a lot of people from our group have been to see one or more of them. For those unfamiliar with this tournament, it is what is referred to by many as "Extreme Martial Arts": Full contact fighting, open to any martial arts style. Enshin). The Sabaki Challenge was held in Denver last weekend. Full Contact Karate – List of full contact Karate styles (i.e.Enshin Katas – Shiro Obi No Kata, Ao Obi No Kata, etc. However, they include things that were heavily used in Kyokushin, but don’t exist in the original katas like Sanchin and Seisan, things like boxing style jab/cross combinations.” Due to this modern approach, Enshin Kaikan’s katas are more like choreographed shadowboxing than esoteric patterns. According to Matrix Martial Arts, Enshin’s founder (Kancho Joko Ninomiya) “didn’t bother with fancy names, instead the names are things like “shiro obi no kata”, or “ao obi no kata”, literally they are “white belt kata” and “blue belt kata” respectively. While Enshin focuses on full-contact techniques, it also uses kata (i.e. ![]() Some dojos will also hold their own regional tournaments, separate from the main Sabaki Challenge, in order to help their students gain more fighting experience. Notable champions include Ninomiya’s own sons and UFC fighter Patrick Smith. ![]() Martial artists from other styles can compete in this tournament if they follow the tournament rules. Participants do not fight with gloves or protective gear, with the exception of mouthguards and groin protectors. ![]() This is an annual full contact tournament held in Denver, Colorado where participants can achieve higher scores based on knockdowns, knockouts, etc. ![]() Enshin Karateka train for this by using parries and grabs to facilitate their circular footwork.Įnshin Kaikan is also famous for the “Sabaki Challenge”. According to the World Sabaki Challenge, Sabaki “means the natural way to use an opponent’s force and energy against them, regardless of size.” In practice, this amounts to a focus on using evasive movements and circular footwork to set up angles of attack. This system seeks to turn an attacker’s power against him and allow the martial artist to sidestep into an attacker’s blind spot. As a result of its lineage, Enshin contains all the striking techniques of Kyokushin, but differs due to its inclusion of Judo-styled sweeps and throws.Įnshin also puts a particular concentration on the Sabaki Method. The style is an offshoot of Ashihara Kaikan, itself an offshoot of Kyokushin. Enshin Kaikan (Enshin Karate) – Japanese Martial ArtsĮnshin Kaikan (Enshin Karate) is a style of full-contact Karate created by 1978 All-Japan Tournament champion Joko Ninomiya in 1988. ![]()
